Protect Your Eyes From Computer Radiation

Protect your eyes from computer radiation

Eye fatigue is often experienced by many people when they are using computers every day. Staring at a computer constantly can make eyes dry, especially in rooms with air conditioning.

Researchers have found an easy way to cope with tired eyes from too long looking at a computer, which they call a ‘20-20-20-20’ strategy, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The trick is to blink 20 times for 20 minutes. Then keep the view of the computer for 20 seconds and focus the view on an object that is 20 feet or about six feet.

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is characterized by dry eyes and fatigue, headache, stiff neck and muscle. This is usually a temporary problem, but it can be very annoying when it happens every day.

Those with the highest risk are people who spend more than three hours in front of a computer. CVS can be very annoying and painful, as well as making myopic eyes.

People who spend a lot of time in front of the computer are at risk. However, a higher risk is in employees, because currently most offices have air conditioning, which make the room dry and cold. Air conditioning that is comfortable for the body, has a negative effect on the eyes.

All the people who spend a lot of time in front of computers, especially employees should use these 20-20-20-20 strategies every day. Using eye drops before work is also recommended, but it’s better if you frequently look away from the computer.

Bionic eye ‘enables blind people to see’

bionic-eyeA bionic eye has enabled blind people to read letters and simple words.

The implant converts images from an external camera into electronic signals that the brain can ‘see’.

Tests on 21 patients with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative disease that destroys light-receiving cells at the back of the eye, showed that three quarters were able to correctly identify single letters.

More than half were able to read four-letter words, at the best end of it they can start to read small 5cm letters formed into words. This was a huge change in perception of what we thought this device could do.

The Argus II is currently the only approved retinal prosthesis. A camera mounted on a pair of glasses feeds pictures along a cable to an electronic chip resting against the retina inside the eye.

The chip stimulates the optic nerve, which carries signals to the visual processing centre of the brain, giving the wearer a highly pixellated black and white view of the world.

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

Did you know that everyone is at risk for glaucoma from babies to senior citizens? Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which the optic nerve is damaged leading to progressive, irreversible vision loss if left untreated.  Some forms of glaucoma have virtually no symptoms.

Glaucoma has been called the “silent thief of sight” because the loss of vision often occurs gradually over a long period of time, and symptoms only occur when the disease is quite advanced. Once lost, vision cannot normally be recovered, so treatment is aimed at preventing further loss. Glaucoma is the second-most common cause of blindness after cataracts, in the United States. If the condition is detected early enough, it is possible to arrest the development or slow the progression with medical and surgical means.

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, everyone is at risk for glaucoma.  However, the following groups of people have been identified to be at a higher risk for developing glaucoma:

  1. People over 60.
  2. Family Members with Glaucoma.
  3. Hispanics in Older Age Groups
  4. African Americans and people of African descent.
  5. People of Asian descent, especially those of Japanese descent.
  6. Steroid Users like those who require approximately 14 to 35 puffs per day of steroid inhaler to control severe asthma.
  7. Those with eye injury. The glaucoma can occur immediately after the injury or years later. The most common cause is sports-related injuries such as baseball or boxing.

Free Vision Testing in Florida at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore

Vision

You can get a jump start on your New Year’s resolutions by getting a free vision test at any 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore location between December 15th and December 24th, 2012.  Appointments are required and can be made by calling:

Winter Park/Orlando : 407-767-5600

Melbourne: 321-259-3935

Orange City: 386-774-5000

It’s important to have visual testing done on a regular basis.  These screenings test visual acuity, or the ability to see objects and details at both far and near distances. It also involves the standard reading letters of different sizes on an eye chart.  For further information on maintaining healthy eyes check out eye health checklist for 2012.

Vision screening is especially important for children as it can detect eye problems that are commonly occurring which means they are apparent in approximately 1% of the total population.  Early detection can help fix these issues.

The most commonly used method is visual acuity which is used to evaluate eyesight. Each eye is tested individually and then both eyes are screened at the same time. We advise our clients that already wear contacts or glasses to wear them during their vision screening.  The best possible vision screening result is 20/20.

If we feel that your eyes require further testing, we’ll gladly schedule you a full eye exam with our in-house optometrist. Please note there is a charge for this appointment.  You are free to schedule an appointment with another optometrist if you wish.

20/20 Eyeglass Superstore is a family owned and operated business with locations throughout central Florida.  We look forward to becoming your trusted source for everything related to eye care, glasses and contacts.  Should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us anytime.
